The More You Read, the More Words You Have for What You Think

The More You Read, the More Words You Have for What You Think

Have you ever known exactly what you wanted to say but couldn’t find the right words? The idea is there in your mind, you know what you feel, but when you try to explain it, the words just don’t seem to come.

One of the wonderful things reading can give us is exactly this: it enriches our vocabulary and helps us express ourselves more clearly.

Words Become Part of Us Without Us Even Realizing It

When we read, we come across words and expressions that we may not hear in our everyday conversations. We see them used in context, begin to understand what they mean, and gradually, some of them become part of our own vocabulary.

We don’t need to read with a dictionary beside us or memorize every new word. Simply by encountering words repeatedly and seeing how they are used, our vocabulary can grow over time.

A Richer Vocabulary Is About More Than “Speaking Well”

Having a rich vocabulary doesn’t mean using complicated words to impress other people. Above all, it means being able to say more precisely what you think.

There is a difference between saying “I don’t like it” and being able to explain why you don’t like it. There is a difference between saying “I feel bad” and being able to say that you feel disappointed, anxious, frustrated, overwhelmed, or discouraged.

The more words we know and the better we understand their nuances, the more ways we have to express what is happening in our minds and in our hearts.

Reading Can Also Help Us in Conversations

A good conversation does not depend on using sophisticated words. It depends on our ability to listen, understand, and communicate what we want to say.

Reading introduces us not only to new words, but also to new ideas, experiences, and ways of seeing the world. All of these give us more starting points for meaningful conversations. We can ask better questions, explain an idea more clearly, and take part more easily in discussions about different subjects.

Words Help Us Give Shape to Our Thoughts

Sometimes we have a feeling or an idea but don’t quite know how to define it. Then we come across a word, an expression, or an explanation in a book and suddenly think: “That’s exactly what I was trying to say.”

The book did not create that thought for us. It simply gave us the words to express it.

Why We Believe in Reading

At Demy Academy, we believe that reading is about much more than finishing a book. With every book, we can discover new words, new ideas, and different ways of seeing the world.

Having a rich vocabulary is not about speaking in a more complicated way. It is about being able to express more clearly who you are, what you think, what you feel, and what you want others to understand.

And sometimes, to make ourselves truly understood, all we are missing is the right word.
