Why People Who Want to Change Their Lives Need to Start Reading
Share
There are moments in life when we feel that we want more.
More clarity. More peace. More financial security. More confidence in ourselves. Better health. Better relationships. Maybe even a completely different life from the one we are living now.
But then comes the question: where do you begin?
At DEMY Academy, we believe that one of the simplest and most powerful starting points is this:
Start reading. Start learning.
Not to collect books on a shelf, and not so you can say how many titles you have read in a year. Read to discover things you do not yet know. Read to understand the world better, but also to understand yourself better.
Because it is very difficult to build a different life using exactly the same information, the same beliefs, and the same patterns of thinking that brought you to where you are today.
Your life can grow along with what you know
Think for a moment about all the things you now consider normal.
You learned to speak. You learned to read. You learned to work. You learned to use a phone, a computer, to cook, to drive, and to communicate with others.
Almost everything we know today was once something we did not know.
And yet, at some point in adulthood, many people stop learning intentionally.
We finish school and somehow begin to believe that the learning stage of life is over.
But perhaps that is exactly when one of the most important forms of education begins: the education we choose for ourselves.
You can start learning about money.
About health.
About psychology.
About relationships.
About communication.
About entrepreneurship.
About history.
About nutrition.
About habits.
About people who built extraordinary things.
About other people's mistakes, so you do not have to repeat every single one of them yourself.
Sometimes, one idea found in a book can change a decision. One decision can change your direction. And a new direction can, over time, change your entire life.
You do not have to read only personal development books
When we talk about reading, we are not referring only to motivational or self-help books.
A biography can show you how someone survived failures you never thought possible.
A psychology book can help you understand why you react in certain ways.
A book about money can completely change the way you think about saving and spending.
A book about health can encourage you to ask better questions and become better informed.
A history book can show you how often human behavior repeats itself.
And a good novel can develop your imagination, your empathy, and your ability to see the world through someone else's eyes.
What matters is not reading what everyone else is reading.
What matters is remaining curious.
The mind needs to be used
Our bodies need movement. In a similar way, our minds need challenges.
Reading, learning a foreign language, studying a new subject, solving problems, writing, having interesting conversations, discovering new places and new ideas — all of these give the brain something to work with.
We cannot say that reading guarantees perfect memory at the age of 80. Brain health depends on many different factors.
But there is one idea worth carrying with us throughout life:
never stop using your mind.
Do not accept the idea that after a certain age there is nothing left for you to learn.
You can be 20 years old and stop being curious.
Or you can be 80 and continue discovering new things.
Age does not have to mean the end of curiosity.
Quite the opposite.
I would love for us, at 70, 80, or even 90 years old, to still be able to open a book and say:
“I didn't know that. I want to learn more.”
Reading can also change your inner dialogue
There is another reason why reading matters so much.
We spend an enormous amount of time listening to our own thoughts.
Sometimes those thoughts say:
“I can't.”
“It's too late.”
“I'm just unlucky.”
“I'm not good enough.”
“There is no chance left for me.”
If we hear the same ideas in our own minds for years, we eventually begin to confuse them with the truth.
Books introduce other voices into the conversation.
They show us that there are people who started from nothing.
People who lost everything and rebuilt.
People who changed careers.
People who started businesses later in life.
People who learned new things at an age when others were telling them it was already too late.
And then a new question appears:
What if another way is possible?
Sometimes changing a life begins exactly here.
Not with an answer.
With a better question.
But there is one condition: what you read must eventually enter your life
You can read one hundred books about health and change nothing.
You can read about money and continue spending exactly the same way.
You can read about discipline and still postpone everything that matters.
You can read about relationships and continue repeating the same patterns.
That is why reading is not the destination.
It is the beginning.
Read.
Think.
Ask questions.
Take notes.
Test.
Apply.
Observe what works.
Change what does not.
And then learn again.
This can become a form of education that continues throughout your entire life.
You do not need hours and hours
One of the most common explanations is:
“I don't have time to read.”
But you do not have to begin with one book a week.
Start with ten pages a day.
If you read ten pages every day, that adds up to approximately 3,650 pages in one year.
That can mean many books you have not yet read and thousands of ideas you have not yet encountered.
Maybe some of them will not be useful to you.
Maybe you will forget some of them.
But perhaps on one of those pages, you will find the idea you needed at exactly that moment in your life.
Make learning a lifelong habit
At DEMY Academy, we do not want to tell people what they should think.
We want to encourage them to think.
To read.
To research.
To ask questions.
To stay curious.
To discover new ideas and decide for themselves what is worth keeping and applying.
Because education should not end when school ends.
It can continue at 30.
At 50.
At 60.
At 80.
As long as we are willing to learn, there is something within us that continues to grow.
And if today you feel that you need a change in your life, perhaps you do not need to begin by changing everything.
Maybe you only need to start with something very small.
Open a book.
Read the first ten pages.
Perhaps that is where the next chapter of your life begins.
